A theme I chose in part to reflect my own career as a civil engineer (and which is also intended to embrace the broader theme of women in STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics]) but, also about the difference we as Soroptimists can 'engineer' through our work in educating, enabling and empowering the lives of women and girls.

The Federation of Great Britain and Ireland, comprises 355 clubs in 29 countries. This Federation is spread over UK, Republic of Ireland, Africa, Asia, Caribbean Islands and Malta.
Members are women of all ages, cultures and ethnic groups, who join their local clubs to give service to women and girls. Each club identifies the needs of its community, then establishes specific projects to address those needs. Clubs are grouped into Regions (within the UK) and National Associations (countries with five clubs or more), to enable them to widen their community, and Regions or Nation Associations may also have projects with all Clubs within them will contribute to.

Meru Women’s Garden Project
The SIGBI Project is to be launched on International Women's Day, 8 March 2016. Â The Meru Women's Garden Project was put forward by SI Canterbury, and was selected by Clubs as the winning Project.
Meru District is in Tigania East with a population of 136,000. 90% live in rural areas with HIV/AIDs prevalent in the region. Meru Women's Garden Project will support some of the poorest women-led households in Kenya, and is entirely focussed on providing opportunities to women and girls who may never otherwise be given the chance to earn an income, and gives them status within their community. It fully embraces the three key areas at the heart of SIGBI’s Programme Focus Goals – Educate, Empower and Enable. Improved food production and education will support women and girls to transform their lives and those of others through a process of cascade learning and mentoring thereby reducing poverty, improving health and increasing employment.

The sixtieth session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 14 to 24 March 2016. Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world will attend the session.
